Kent resident targeted by telephone scam
threatening to cut off the phone line

 

Residents in Kent have received phone calls saying they owe money for their telephone line and if they don't pay they will switch their line off.

What happens:

  • You get a phone call saying you owe money for your telephone line
  • The caller says they will switch your line off
  • He tells you to hang up, then try and make a call
  • You try to make a call but there is no dialling tone – the line appears to be dead
  • The scammer calls back demanding the payment

What to do:

  • This is a SCAM - Do not give any bank details
  • The scammer makes your line appear dead by staying on the line but muting the sound - you cannot make calls
